Kenninji temple worship tour - a taste of Japanese art at the oldest Zen temple in Japan.

Plan Details

This tour takes visitors around Kenninji, the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto. The tour includes a tour of the Shion-tei Garden, designated as an Important Cultural Property, and powerful Japanese paintings from the Edo period such as The Wind and Thunder Gods and The Twin Dragons, with commentary. The more you know about Kenninji Temple, the more you will enjoy the temple. The temple was founded in 1202 by Eisai, founder of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism. It is the head temple of the Kenninji School of the Rinzai Sect and was once the third of the five temples of Kyoto. There are many important cultural assets, including the Wind and Thunder Gods (original version donated to the Kyoto National Museum), the Shion-tei garden, the Imperial Gate, the Cloud Dragon and the Twin Dragons.
